3. Core logic β€” Inventory Number system

Every exhibition keyed to E[YEAR].[S|G].[N] β€” e.g. E2009.S.7 = 7th solo exhibition of 2009. This is the primary key for cross-sheet linking (catalogues, press, social).

5. Comparison logic for siblings

Step A β€” Classify: detect the block (exhibitions / library / press / social) from content, not filename. Match on ID patterns (E\d{4}\.[SG]\.\d+), ISBN columns, periodical fields, etc.

Step B β€” Fuzzy-map columns: normalize headers + use a synonym dictionary (Opening β‰ˆ Start Date β‰ˆ From; Venue β‰ˆ Organization) plus value-type heuristics.

Step C β€” Bucket rows: complement new row, field-complement match exists, empty fields get filled, conflict same ID but fields disagree, repeat duplicate.

Step D β€” Stage, don't overwrite. Output goes to /Proposals as a per-file .xlsx. Master is untouched until a proposal is merged.

E2009.S.7_FAURSCHOU_GALLERY_proposal.xlsx

Summary of findings

The PDF is the 2009 Faurschou Beijing worklist for Ai Weiwei's "World Map" solo show. The master already has the row (E2009.S.7) with correct title, venue, dates, and curator (Tessa Praun), but the Artwork List is both incomplete and lacks all field-level detail (dimensions, media, lenders, insurance values). The PDF supplies all of that plus one missing artwork.

  • Missing artwork: "Stool" (2008) β€” two Qing Dynasty stools, 60 Γ— 38 Γ— 65 cm. Not present in the current master's artwork list.
  • Unrecorded lenders: Fairytale Dormitory was co-lent by Erlenmeyer Stiftung (CH), Leister Foundation (CH), and Galerie Urs Meile in addition to Ai Weiwei.
  • Insurance values: €10,000 per artwork recorded across all four works as of 2009. Not currently in the master.
  • Dimensions & media: PDF supplies precise measurements and materials for every work. Master only has bare titles + years.
  • Separate issue flagged: the master's Exhibition Description for this row appears truncated ("measuring …" and "is constructed from thousands …"). Not caused by the PDF β€” flagged for a separate fix.

100% β€” exact title + venue + year match
field-complement + conflicts + missing works
E2009.S.6_MORI_ART_MUSEUM_proposal.xlsx

Summary of findings

The Mori worklist is substantial β€” 11 pages covering 27 artwork entries across 11 museum spaces (ATRIUM, HALL 1–4, GALL 1–6, SPREAD). The master row (E2009.S.6) has curator Mami Kataoka, full description, correct dates and venue β€” but the Artwork List is truncated mid-word ("Dr") and conflates two separate works into one. Several significant artworks are missing entirely.

  • bug Artwork List is truncated in the master β€” ends at "Dr" (almost certainly the start of "Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, 1995").
  • conflict Two works bundled as one: master has "Provisional Landscapes and Beijing's Olympic Stadium, 2002 – 2008". The PDF shows these are two distinct wallpaper installations in two different halls: Provisional Landscapes (195 images, HALL 4) and Beijing's 2008 Olympic Stadium (232 images, HALL 2).
  • conflict "Cube in Ebony" (singular) vs "Cubes in Ebony" (2 pieces) β€” the PDF shows two pieces with €15,000 insurance each.
  • missing At least 6 artworks absent from the master list:
    • Colored Vases (2006) β€” 21 Neolithic vases with industrial paint, lender Urs Meile Gallery
    • Tang Dynasty Courtesan in a Bottle (1994) β€” clay sculpture, lender Larry Warsh
    • Fragments (2005) β€” 500 Γ— 850 Γ— 700 cm, dismantled Qing temple parts, lender Urs Meile
    • Fairytale (2008) β€” the 2 h 32 min documentary video of the documenta 12 project
    • Fairytale Chairs (2007) β€” 100 Qing Dynasty chairs installed in GALL 1
    • Fairytale Guard Chairs (2007) β€” 20 additional chairs for guards in SPREAD
  • review Identity question: master lists "Divina Proportione, 2006"; PDF has "Untitled, 2006" (Ø 169 cm, 2 pieces, Huali wood) in GALL 6. Possibly the same work under different titles β€” needs confirmation.
  • enrichment Per-work enrichment: gallery locations, precise dimensions, materials (wood species, dynasty provenance), quantities, lenders, and insurance values for all 27 works. Total insured value logged in PDF > €250,000.
  • enrichment Alternative lenders recorded: Urs Meile Gallery (Kippe, Colored Vases, Fragments) and Larry Warsh (Tang Dynasty Courtesan in a Bottle) β€” not just Ai Weiwei.
  • note Master description says "26 works"; PDF has 27 entries. Count should be reviewed for consistency.

Proposal β€” Exhibitions_Projects 2018.xlsx

Exhibiton-Solo + Exhibiton-Group (sibling doesn't pre-split)
20 / 21 rows match master entries (95%)
field-complement + fix + add-candidate
2018_Exhibitions_Projects_proposal.xlsx

Summary of findings

This file is a Smartsheet project-management export, not a traditional exhibition list. Its columns (Start, Finish, Task Name, Location, Type, TITLE, Comments, Predecessors, % Complete, Status, Duration) required full fuzzy column-mapping to reach the master schema. Once mapped, 20 of 21 real rows matched master entries via Title + Venue + Year, so this is primarily a field-complement rather than a row-add.

  • win E2018.G.3 "Beating Around the Bush #5" β€” master row has Venue = NaN, Location = NaN, and no dates. Sibling fills all three: Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht, Netherlands, 25 Jan – 2 Dec 2018. Also provides a note: "Bowl of Pearls will be part of the collection display".
  • typo fix E2018.G.1 β€” master has "Bienanle of Sydney 21st Edition". Should be "Biennale". Clear typo.
  • enrichment 10 rows get Comments appended with contextual info the master lacks: curator names (Mami Kataoka for Sydney), travelling-exhibition provenance (Guggenheim Bilbao β†’ SFMOMA, Sakip Sabanci β†’ Mardin, PROA β†’ CorpArtes), and artwork highlights (Tadao Ando building for Wrightwood, "8000 mΒ²" for OCA SΓ£o Paulo Straight installation, etc.).
  • add-candidate Possibly missing exhibition β€” "NG Prague" (Bicycle Chandelier, Czech Republic anniversary). Marked "unconfirmed" in sibling with tbc dates. Not present in Exhibiton-Solo, Exhibiton-Group, or Exhibiton-Cancelled for 2018. Needs human confirmation: did it happen?
  • note 3 minor title variations (Ai Weiwei on Porcelain β†’ in Mardin; RAIZ WEIWEI β†’ Ai Weiwei: RAIZ; Urban Forest β†’ Una Foresta Urbana per Palermo) logged as informational only β€” master has canonical titles.
  • note Sibling is incomplete. Master has two 2018 group shows the sibling doesn't: Pop Minimalism (Miami) and PERFECT & PRICELESS (Zurich). No action β€” not a defect.

Summary of findings

Two variants of the same document. The main file (A) is a chronological running list; the HZ variant groups 2016 by country (partial) and adds 2 Γ— 2017 entries missing from A plus one comment enrichment. I processed both together and diffed them before matching against the master.

  • win 4 candidate new rows β€” Monument Lab (Philadelphia, 2017), 4 Artists / 4 Rooms @ Menil Collection Houston (2017), a smaller Fountain of Light @ Louvre Abu Dhabi (from March 2017), and an untitled Trees installation @ Tate Modern Switch House (2016-06-17 β†’ ongoing). None are present in master Solo / Group / Others / Cancelled for those years.
  • conflict E2016.S.11 Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei β€” source gives 04.06.–02.09.2016 (European DD.MM, closing Sept 2). Master has closing 2016-09-11. One of them is wrong; likely master.
  • conflict E2017.G.8 Luther and the Avant-Garde β€” master: Lutherhaus Eisenach / Wittenberg, Germany (internally contradictory β€” Lutherhaus is in Eisenach, not Wittenberg). Source says Prison of Wittenberg, Wittenberg. The master row needs to be cleaned up either way.
  • comment E2016.G.13 Wir nennen es Ludwig β€” HZ variant adds "Forever Bicycle" as the work featured; suggest appending to Copright & Comments.
  • note Title fill-ins β€” sources use "tbd" for several shows that the master has since finalised (Tyre, Law of the Journey, Odyssey, Ai Weiwei On Porcelain, Maybe Maybe Not). No master edit required β€” sources simply predate title finalisation. Logged as informational.
  • note E2016.S.14 vs E2016.G.31 β€” possible duplicate in master. Both rows describe the same Cuenca Cathedral exhibition (one titled "S.A.C.R.E.D", the other "The Poetry of Freedom"). Source has a single entry called "The Poetics of Freedom". Human decision needed.
  • note Source typo β€” A-8 "Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, US" (should be UK). Master is correct; flag only.

Summary of findings

This is the most historically valuable sibling so far. Dong Xu's list covers the pre-2003 period β€” exactly the era where the master is sparsest (Solo has 2 pre-2003 rows, Group has ~20). The filename suffix "questions" strongly suggests this is Dong Xu's own gaps-and-corrections worksheet.

  • win 9 missing exhibitions β€” including historically significant entries: 1st Guangzhou Triennale (2002), The second "Stars Exhibition" (1980, National Art Museum of China), New Zone: Chinese Art @ Zacheta (2004), Change: Chinese Contemporary Art @ Goteborg (1995), and several others.
  • cancelled? Row 7 "Junction" @ Lianyang Architecture Art Museum (2002) β€” Dong Xu marked this "not participated??" in the comments column. Should go into Exhibiton-Cancelled, not Group.
  • conflict E2000.G.2 β€” master has venue "Shangai Bienalle" (sic), title "Portraits, Figures, Couples and Groups". Dong Xu says the venue is BizArt, not the Shanghai Biennale. These are two completely different institutions β€” one row is wrong. BizArt is the more plausible venue for this title.
  • conflict E1986.G.1 β€” master venue "City Gallery", Dong Xu says "Albany University Art Museum / Vassar College Art Gallery" (touring show). Verify master.
  • enrichment 4 field-complements: catalogue titles for E2001.G.3 (Tu Mu) and E2000.G.3 (Fuck Off), touring venue chain for E1989.G.1 (Hong Kong β†’ Taipei β†’ Dunkirk β†’ Paris), and a provenance note for E1988.S.1 ("Ethan Cohen's gallery").
  • schema gap Source has an "exhibition space sqm" column with no master equivalent. Recommend either adding a new column or absorbing into comments.
